Vars. 6. Interborough Rapid Transit opened subway service October 27, 1904 with a 5¢ fare. In 1928, in anticipation of a 7¢ fare that never materialized, 6,000,000 tokens were struck. In 1940, NYCTS inherited these tokens when it took over IRT and unified it with BMT and IND. During World War II some were sold to other companies, and in 1948 NYCTA sold the remaining stock for scrap.
